In the summer of 1948, a few energetic fathers and their excited children, a rich, Sephardic tradition, and the great outdoors of the Northwest, all met to forge an extraordinary experience that was so positive, it had to be repeated. And so it was - every summer since!
The Sephardic congregations of Seattle, Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation and Congregation Ezra Bessaroth, recognized the value of these summer retreats and collectively created the Sephardic Adventure Camp, an organization committed to preserving the Sephardic tradition, instilling the values of our Jewish heritage, building the moral character of our children, and ensuring a summer of fun and memories to last a lifetime.
This commitment is woven into the extensive programming that
fills each and every day of the camp's three-week session. Activities include:
swimming, boating, hiking, sports, arts & crafts, Torah learning, field trips,
Sephardic culture sessions, and much more. Moreover, all days begin with and
include orthodox prayer services, and each week culminates with the observance of
Shabbat, a very special experience at SAC.
Our programming excels largely in part by the responsible and
capable staff that run it. Comprised mostly of former campers, athletes, college
and yeshiva students, and certified lifeguards, they are led by Camp Directors
Jeffrey Solam and Gail Ben-Meir, who are both returning with many years of SAC
experience.
Also key to the success of our summer camp is the spiritual leadership and involvement of our local Sephardic pulpit rabbinate, Rabbi Simon Benzaquen,
who combines his talent and personality to form meaningful bonds with the
children that last far beyond the summer session.
Over the years, we have expanded our camper base from the local Seattle community to Jewish communities
across the western United States, including California, Oregon, Colorado and
Idaho, as well as from communities in New York, Florida, British Columbia, and Israel. As our reputation continues to
grow, we expect campers from throughout the Unites States and around the world to join us and participate in building the Northwest's premier Jewish summer camp. We hope you will, too.
