The Legend of the SAC Toilet Seat

SAC 2024 Camp Communications

The year: 1987. The place: Sephardic Adventure Camp. Leah Hanan and Simon Amiel were co-directors at SAC. Early on in the summer, they found themselves at Eagle Hardware (which is now Lowe’s) buying last-minute odds and ends for camp. Simon stumbled upon the wall of toilet seats and thought it would be funny if they bought one. Because, you know, toilets are funny. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with it, but for reasons beyond himself, he bought that toilet seat.

On the ride back to camp, it came to him. Simon decided that the toilet seat would make a great prize for the cleanest cabin. So, they ran with it and gave the toilet seat to the cleanest cabin every day (except Shabbat).

Legend has it that till today the toilet seat lives on, and every year at SAC, campers compete for the honor of wearing the cleanest cabin SAC Toilet Seat.

It’s comforting to know that almost forty years later, not much has changed at SAC. We are still building the same community and lifelong connections. While we may not give the Toilet Seat out to the tune of the Brady Bunch anymore, the unity and joy the award sparks is just the same as it was forty years ago.

Do you remember the Toilet Seat from your SAC days? Come reminisce and tell your stories with other Alumni at our SAC Alumni BBQ on June 30, 2024. Join as we keep all of our traditions alive this summer. Please inquire at jodi@sephardicadventurecamp.org for more details.
