Celebrating the Mimouna Like Never Before – Only at SAC
By Elana Marom, Staff Director
The Mimouna, originally celebrated by Moroccan Jews, is now celebrated by everyone in Israel – and this summer by everyone at SAC. The Mimouna is a festive dinner that falls at the end of Passover, and lucky for us, the theme this year at camp was Pesach.
The spirit of the Mimouna encourages an open environment, where campers can connect and appreciate both diversity and community, as they learn from one another’s unique cultural heritage and get to experience various customs first hand.
“Tirbahu vetis’adu” is the traditional Mimouna greeting. It is an open-door invitation for everyone to come and feel at home to actively participate in the party and enjoy the culture, food, music, and dancing.
And that’s exactly what happened at SAC.
Planned and led by the amazing programming team, Sara Avrahamy and Rachel Levy turned the dining hall into a truly magical Mimouna celebration…
Campers and staff were dressed in the traditional jalabiyas and kaftans. Tables were decorated beautifully with a rich, colorful spread of sweets, pastries, dried fruit, Moroccan tea and even freshly-made delicious muflettas (a thin pancake made from water, flour and oil, and served with butter and honey).
Traditional Mimouna music made EVERYONE dance into the night, and the inspiring atmosphere of friendship, respect, and unity was simply contagious.
Such a special and unforgettable Mimouna can only be celebrated at SAC, where everyone is committed to preserving and cherishing the rich traditions of Sephardic Jews across the world, while fostering a sense of belonging and instilling pride in the shared heritage of SAC campers.
